Try auto mode on the homepage

How Auto Mode Works in 1 in 8 Billion

This page explains one part of the game. It is an independent copy, not the official site. The life itself starts on this language’s homepage.

What auto mode does

Auto mode lets the game choose the yearly focus and the decisions, so you can watch. It does not write the whole life in advance, and it does not draw the country of birth.

How to turn it on

On a wide screen, Auto mode is in the top bar. At 560 pixels and below, ⋯ opens the menu and Auto mode is inside it. Press it once. The setting is kept in this browser. This page’s link home does not turn it on for you.

Switch it in the game

Which decisions it makes

It acts only when a decision is actually open: school, work, family, moving, medical care, and other events that life reaches. An event that never appears is not decided. The same events do not show up in every life.

How a choice is picked

The game looks at the event and the options on screen. Some events use weights. If no special rule matches, it picks evenly among the options that are there. It is not always the first button, and it is not a solver for a good ending.

Choosing one yourself

While the countdown is showing, Turn off auto turns the mode off. Pressing the card, rather than a choice, stops that countdown so you can pick this one. Set aside ▾ lowers the window. Open it again from the bar that stays behind. None of these undo a choice already made.

Not the same as speed

Speed changes how fast the years pass. Next decision jumps toward the next decision and still waits for a choice. Auto mode is the one that picks.

Three controls that are easy to mix up. None of them draws the country.
SettingWhat it changesWhat it leaves alone
Auto modeMakes the yearly focus and the open decision, after a short countdown. The country draw, the pace chosen before birth, and any promise about the ending.
1×–16×How fast the years pass once the life has started.Which option is picked. A decision still waits unless Auto mode is on.
Next decisionMoves the life forward until the next decision. The choice itself. It does not finish the life.

The life can still go anywhere

Birthplace and the statistics of that place still apply. An automatic choice can change what happens next. It does not promise health, income, or a long life. When some decisions were automatic, the ending can say how many.

Questions about auto mode

Short answers. The speed page and the choices page go further.

Does it pick the first option?

No. Special events use weights. Otherwise it picks evenly among the options on screen.

Can I turn it off mid-life?

Yes. Press Auto mode again, or Turn off auto on the decision. The homepage link does not do this for you.

Is it the same as 16×?

No. 16× only shortens the wait between years. The decision still needs a choice unless Auto mode is on.

Are automatic choices marked?

The ending can show how many decisions were automatic. It does not hide that they happened.
