Terms of Use

Last updated 16 October 2026.

These terms cover the free simulation, accounts, and the optional payment that keeps a life in the archive.

The service

1 in 8 Billion lets you live a simulated life drawn from public statistics. The person, the family, and the events are generated. They are not a real biography. Playing the unpaid game does not require an account.

The site is published at 1in8billion.app. By using it, you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy.

Using the site

Do not misuse the site. That includes trying to break sign-in or payments, scraping in a way that degrades the service, or posting a link, a phone number, or someone else’s private information on a memorial or a shared life.

A life can include difficult subjects because the model follows real statistics. It is not medical, legal, financial, or safety advice. If you are in crisis, contact local emergency services.

Accounts

You can sign in with an email code or with Google. You are responsible for the email account you use. We may close an account that is used to abuse the site or to evade a limit.

Keeping a life

A finished life can stay in the life archive and its memorial for 3 days at no charge. After that, the public page closes unless you pay. If you never pay, the life can be deleted for good 30 days after the free days end.

Just this life is a one-time payment of US$6.90. That life stays in the archive and the memorial, and its keepsakes can be saved. Keeper is US$29 a month and keeps up to 8 lives at once; deleting one frees its seat. Unlimited is US$55 a month and does not cap the number. Prices are in US dollars and are shown again on the Stripe payment page before you pay. Taxes may be added where Stripe collects them.

A payment has to be made by an adult. If you are under 19, a parent or guardian should pay.

Refunds

Within 30 days of the day you paid, you can ask for a refund without giving a reason. Email [email protected] from the address you paid with, or include that address in the message. If the device still has the pass, include the refund code shown when you request a refund in the app.

A refunded one-time purchase closes that life’s archive page and memorial. The life can still be bought back until it is deleted. A subscription refund, when we grant one, stops future charges for that period. Lives you have already kept stay kept unless the refund was for the payment that kept them.

After 30 days, refunds are limited to a payment that failed, was charged twice, or was otherwise in error.

Subscriptions

Keeper and Unlimited renew each month until you cancel. You can cancel any time under Manage subscription. Stripe handles that page. Cancelling stops the next charge. It does not delete lives you have already kept.

If a renewal payment fails, the pass shows that the payment did not go through until you update the payment method.

What you post

You keep your rights to the words you write. You give us permission to store them, show them on a memorial or a shared life when you submit them, and quote a shared post without your name when we describe the site. Do not post anything you do not have the right to share.

We may remove a post that includes a link or contact details, that identifies a real person, or that is reported.

The site itself

The game, its text, and its design belong to the operator of 1in8billion.app. Statistics are adapted from public sources named in the game, including the UN, the World Bank, WHO, and Our World in Data. Those sources keep their own terms.

Ads are served by Google. An ad is not an endorsement by us.

Availability and liability

The site can be interrupted for maintenance, a failed payment provider, or a host outage. A life stored only in your browser can be lost if you clear site data or change devices. We are not liable for that loss, or for decisions you make because of a simulated life.

To the extent the law allows, the site is provided as is, and our liability for a paid plan is limited to the amount you paid us for that plan in the three months before the claim.

Changes

We can update these terms. The date on this page is the date of the current version. If you keep using the site after an update, the new terms apply. The refund window you already paid under does not get shorter.
