Try a life on Today

Future World: Projections, Not Certainties

This page explains one part of the game. It is an independent copy, not the official site. The life itself starts on this language’s homepage.

What would change

The future is meant to start from the present and then run into later years. On this copy it does not start, because era.js is missing. The homepage link does not switch the setting for you.

Keep the three labels apart

An observed figure, a published projection and a simulated life are not the same claim. The table uses those three words on purpose. This page does not publish a 2050 ranking of countries.

Three different kinds of statement. Do not read them as one timeline of facts.
LabelWhat it is allowed to mean
ObservedA figure the game treats as already measured, such as the current birth weights labeled UN World Population Prospects 2024.
ProjectedA published projection, such as a future population path. It is not a promise that the year will happen that way.
SimulatedA game event or household result. It can use a projection as an input and still be fiction for that character.

Read past and future apart

Births, life, school and income

The engine has year adjustments for population, schooling and income. Exact future values stay hidden until the data file is present. Today’s ppp is not a forecast.

Technology, climate and disease

The game can include scenario events. If they appear, they are draws inside a life. They are not a statement that the real future must unfold that way, and this page will not invent their probabilities.

Choices still are not destiny

A decision can change the character’s later years. The place, the age and the remaining events still matter. No choice makes a scenario certain.

Against the past setting

Past world is about a year that the data treats as already observed. Future world mixes projection and invention. Neither should be filled with the other year’s numbers.

What is unknowable here

Without era.js there is no checked upper year and no per-country future table. Uncertainty is the honest state of this page.

Will it really happen?

A simulated life is not a prediction about you.

Can I be born in 2050?

Not from this page, and not while era.js is missing.

The four world settings

Are the future numbers facts?

No. Separate observed, projected and simulated, and do not promote a projection into a fact.

How do I play today?
