Choose a world and be born

Past, Present and Future Modes in 1 in 8 Billion

This page explains one part of the game. It is an independent copy, not the official site. The life itself starts on this language’s homepage.

Four worlds

The homepage buttons are The past, Today, The future and Any world. Today is the one this copy can run from start to a life. The table is availability, not a ranking of which world is luckier.

What this copy can run. Year limits are not shown, because they are inside era.js, and that file is not included.
SettingOn this copy
The pastNot available here. era.js is missing, so a past life stops with the game’s own loading message.
TodayAvailable. It uses the country file shipped with this site. There is no year to choose.
The futureNot available here. era.js is missing, so a future life stops with the game’s own loading message.
Any worldThe game draws The past, Today or The future with equal chance. A past draw then picks a year by that year’s births or population. Only a today result can start on this copy, because era.js is missing.

Start in this world

The past

In the game’s design you pick a birth year, or you ask for a random year. A random year is weighted by that year’s births, or by population if that is the draw you chose. It is not a flat list of years. The allowed years are stored in era.js. That file is not in this copy, so no year range is printed here, and a past life does not start.

Today

Today starts in the present and keeps the current statistics as the baseline. That is not a promise that the file updates every real-world year. The life still begins at age 0.

The future

You are born now, and the life moves into later years. The game describes this as projections plus patterns taken from history, not as a future that has been decided. era.js is required, and it is missing here, so this mode does not start.

Any world

Any world draws The past, Today or The future with equal chance, one of those three. If the past comes up, a year is drawn too, weighted by births or by population. This page does not pretend the three worlds are available just because the button is visible.

Combined with the country draw

Babies born now and The 8 billion alive now still decide the country. In the present they use this file. In a past year they would use that year, which this copy cannot load. The probability page is the present-world calculator.

Which one to open

For a first life, use Today. That is a practical suggestion because it runs here, not a strategy for a better life. Past is for a historical year once era.js loads. Future is for a projected life, and it is not a prediction.

If the era data does not load

The game asks for /era.js and, if it cannot, shows its own message and stops that life. Choose Today and press Be born again. Do not treat a stuck past or future button as a hidden year list.

Common questions

The buttons are real. The historical and future lives are not runnable in this copy.

Which years can I pick?

The range is inside era.js. This copy does not include it, so no years are listed.

Does the past show real events?

That is the design: events tied to the chosen year. It cannot be checked here until era.js loads.

Is the future accurate?

No. It is one scenario built from projections, not a promise that those events happen.
